Optimism is an Ethereum Layer 2 that pioneered the vision of a unified "Superchain" — a network of interconnected L2s sharing security, communication standards, and governance. While Arbitrum may lead in TVL, Optimism has arguably had a larger strategic impact through the OP Stack, a modular framework that powers some of the most important L2 deployments in crypto, including Coinbase's Base chain. The OP Stack approach has been transformative: instead of competing for every DeFi user, Optimism exports its technology as infrastructure. When Coinbase launched Base using the OP Stack, it validated the Superchain thesis — major companies can launch their own L2s that interoperate with the broader Optimism ecosystem. Sony, Worldcoin, and several other enterprises have followed suit. Optimism's governance is notable for its innovative "bicameral" structure with a Token House (OP holders voting on protocol upgrades) and a Citizens' House (identity-based governance focused on public goods funding). This dual structure reflects a belief that token-weighted governance alone cannot serve all stakeholders fairly.
Optimism PBC was founded in 2019 by Jing Wang, Karl Floersch, and Kevin Ho. The mainnet launched in January 2021 as one of the first Ethereum L2s. The OP token airdrop in May 2022 rewarded early users. The OP Stack was open-sourced in 2023, and Coinbase's Base launched on it shortly after — a watershed moment that validated L2-as-infrastructure. Optimism's Retroactive Public Goods Funding (RPGF) program has distributed millions in OP to projects that benefit the ecosystem, establishing a novel incentive model for open-source development.
Like Arbitrum, Optimism uses optimistic rollups to batch L2 transactions and post them to Ethereum. Transactions are assumed valid unless challenged with a fault proof during a window period. The OP Stack is a modular, open-source framework that separates the rollup into composable layers: execution, settlement, consensus, and data availability. This modularity allows chains built on the OP Stack to customize their configuration while remaining interoperable. Superchain interoperability is the next frontier — the goal is for all OP Stack chains to communicate seamlessly, sharing liquidity and users. Cross-chain messaging will allow a user on Base to interact with a contract on Optimism mainnet without bridging, creating a unified user experience across multiple L2s.
OP has a total supply of approximately 4.29 billion tokens. Distribution includes 25% to the ecosystem fund, 20% to RPGF, 19% to user airdrops, 19% to core contributors, and 17% to investors. OP is used for governance and incentive programs. Notably, sequencer revenue from the Superchain is being directed toward the Optimism Collective treasury, with plans to fund public goods and ecosystem development. Additional OP airdrops for active users are expected.
Coinbase (Base), Sony, Worldcoin, and others launching on the OP Stack validates the Superchain vision and creates network effects.
The bicameral Token House and Citizens' House structure, plus Retroactive Public Goods Funding, pioneer new models for decentralized governance.
The vision of seamless communication between all OP Stack chains could create the largest unified L2 ecosystem in crypto.
As more OP Stack chains launch, sequencer fees flowing to the Optimism Collective create a growing revenue base for the ecosystem.
Optimism mainnet has less DeFi liquidity than Arbitrum, though this is partially offset by Base and other OP Stack chains.
Like most L2s, Optimism uses a centralized sequencer with plans for eventual decentralization that have not yet been implemented.
Multiple planned airdrops and ecosystem incentive programs dilute existing OP holders over time.
The interoperability vision is ambitious but unproven. Coordinating upgrades across independently operated chains is complex.
The Superchain is Optimism's vision for a network of interoperable L2 chains all built on the OP Stack. Chains like Base, Mode, and Zora would communicate seamlessly, share liquidity, and benefit from collective security upgrades. Think of it as an L2 ecosystem where chains cooperate rather than compete.
Optimism has a bicameral system. The Token House (OP holders) votes on protocol upgrades and treasury allocation. The Citizens' House (identity-based, not token-weighted) governs Retroactive Public Goods Funding. This separation prevents pure plutocracy and ensures public goods receive sustained funding.
OP's value proposition includes governance over a growing Superchain ecosystem, potential sequencer revenue sharing, and the strategic importance of the OP Stack. Risks include aggressive token inflation from airdrops and grants, competition from other L2s, and execution risk on the interoperability roadmap.
